7 Complications of Hyperhidrosis

7 Complications of Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that results in abnormally excessive sweating not related to exercise or heat. At times, you may sweat so much that your clothes get completely soaked in sweat. It makes it challenging for you to complete your everyday activities, and this sort of excessive sweating might also result in embarrassment and social anxiety. So what are some of the common complications of hyperhidrosis?

1. Social and emotional effects
Heavy sweating might pose severe challenges for certain people. In some people with hyperhidrosis, the symptoms may either be barely tolerable or intolerable. Having perspiration-soaked clothes or dripping or clammy hands is indeed quite embarrassing. In addition, your condition will harm your educational goals and pursuit of work. Many even report discomfort in their romantic lives because of this condition.

2. Bromhidrosis
One of the most common complications of hyperhidrosis is body odor. However, it is not the sweat that causes the bad smell. Instead, it is the skin bacteria, which comes in contact with sweat, leading to a bad odor. The sweat in the genital area or underarms is most prone to creating body odor. Constricted in tight socks or shoes or sweaty feet may also produce a pungent smell. To avoid this complication, you should keep these areas particularly clean, but managing odor is a challenge in itself for someone with hyperhidrosis.

3. Athlete’s foot
Also known as tenia pedis, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection quite similar to tinea cruris. This condition stems from a fungus, which grows in a moist and wet environment, located between the toes or on foot, not in the groin area.

4. Heat rash – miliaria or prickly heat
A red or an itchy skin rash often results in a prickling or a stinging sensation. A heat rash occurs because of the obstruction in the sweat ducts or when the sweat is trapped beneath the skin.

5. Skin conditions
Excessive sweating makes you susceptible to certain skin conditions like:

  • Eczema
Eczema is a skin condition where the skin patches become itchy, inflamed, rough, and cracked. Hyperhidrosis might make eczema more severe.
  • Warts
It is a rough, small lump on the skin’s surface caused by the HPV virus.
  • Boils
Swollen reddish-yellow bumps might show on the skin if any hair follicle is infected.
  • Bacterial infection
The skin breakdown or   maceration   following excessive sweating paves the way for easy bacteria entry into the skin. This can lead to bacterial infections.

6. Jock itch
It is also known as tinea crusis. It is a fungal infection that occurs in the folds of the groin. When you sweat a lot, it produces a continuous moist environment, which makes the jock itchy.

7. Skin maceration
Skin softening or maceration might develop in the affected areas if the skin remains moist frequently.
