Prominent Types and Signs of Breast Cancer
Mutation or changes in genes that regulate cell growth causes cancer. Due to this mutation, cells divide and multiply abnormally, causing tumors that lead to cancer. When such multiplication occurs in the breast cells, it is called breast cancer. It usually forms in the ducts or lobules of the breast. Read on to know more about the types of breast cancer and symptoms that can help identify the ailment.
1. Types of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer can be categorized into two major groups depending on whether the cancer has spread or not. The two categories are non-invasive and invasive. Non-invasive types are also called in situ. Invasive breast cancer has spread to the surrounding tissues from the milk ducts. The cancer that begins in the milk ducts and spread to the other breast tissues are categorized as situ breast cancer. The most common types include
- Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS)
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive condition in which cancerous cells are only found in the ducts in the breast. - Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS)
LCIS is the tumor that grows in the breast glands that are responsible for producing milk. Similar to DCIS, these cancerous cells are confined to the gland and not spread to the surrounding breast tissues. - Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC)
This is one of the common kinds of breast cancer, which begins in the milk ducts present in the breast. IDC cancer later spreads to nearby tissues in the breast, following which it goes to other parts of the body. - Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC)
ILC starts from one’s breast’s lobules and goes on to spread to the nearby tissues.
2. Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Some indications of this condition are
- Underarm or Collarbone Swelling
If one notices swelling near the collarbone or under the arms, the lymph nodes are affected by breast. The swelling can be noticed before one feels a lump is formed. If such swelling is noticed, one should inform their doctor.
- Flattening or Indentation on the Breast
A tumor that one is unable to feel or see can cause an indented or flat area on the breast. Such a sign cannot be ignored and must be examined immediately.
- Lump in the Breast or Underarm
This is usually the most evident symptom in a person suffering from breast cancer. The doctor can check out the suspicious lump using a mammogram, even if one is not able to feel or see it. Lumps can be a result of other health issues; however, a lump that does not go away is considered a sign of breast cancer.
- Nipple Changes
This includes a nipple that is dimpled, pulls inward, itches, or burns. Unusual nipple discharge, such as discharge that is bloody, clear, or another color is also a sign of breast cancer.
So, these are the types of breast cancer and symptoms commonly associated with the condition.
